India Signs UN Convention Against Cybercrime at UNGA Session

Table of Content

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar signed the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The convention seeks to strengthen international cooperation against online fraud, ransomware, and other cross-border digital crimes.

Bilateral pull-asides

Jaishankar also discussed the Gulf situation with Iran’s foreign minister during the session, amid heightened regional tensions. Officials said both sides exchanged views on de-escalation and the safety of shipping lanes.

Why the convention matters

With Indians among the most-targeted users for phishing and investment scams, the treaty framework could speed up evidence-sharing and extradition processes that today take months.

Next steps

Ratification processes will follow in member states. Cybersecurity experts say the real test will lie in implementation and coordination between national agencies.
