World Bank Keeps India at 7.1% Growth for FY27, Fastest Among Major Economies

Table of Content

India’s economy is projected to grow at 7.1% in FY27, supported by robust domestic demand and strong exports, according to the World Bank’s latest India Development Update released this week. Despite global headwinds, India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world and a key contributor to global growth.

Domestic demand does the heavy lifting

The report notes that consumption and investment at home have cushioned the economy against external shocks. Strong export performance, particularly in services, has added further momentum, while the broader South Asia region is expected to grow 6.9% in 2026, retaining its status as the world’s strongest-growing region.

Risks on the horizon

The outlook is not without caveats. The Bank flags elevated external risks, including volatile global oil prices, weather disruptions, and the possibility of stock market corrections. Policymakers, it says, will need to watch food inflation and energy costs closely through the winter months.

AI as an opportunity

Notably, the update argues that artificial intelligence can create new opportunities for India if backed by the right policy actions, from skilling to digital infrastructure. For now, the message is one of cautious optimism: growth intact, but vigilance required.
